Trouble the Water

Vernon Mitchell Jr. is the academic engagement programs manager for the University Libraries at Washington University in St. Louis, and a lecturer in American Culture Studies. His course, “Don’t Believe the Hype: Race, Media and Social Movements in America, 1915 to 2015,” examines the history of racist imagery in the United States to help students understand the construction of racist narratives — and understand their own historical moment in a larger context.
